One of the two major mountain bike suspension options is hardtail suspension, a configuration which includes a solid frame and a fork on the front of the bike. Whether you should choose to go with a mountain bike with the hardtail suspension option depends largely on the type of ride you want, as well as your personal style of riding.

The advantages of riding a hardtail mountain bike

A hardtail suspension mountain bike will transfer much of your raw pedalling power to the rear wheel, which means that, at least on tracks and trails that haven’t been designed for technical riders, you’ll be able to accelerate more efficiently, as well as maintain top speeds. There’s also the issue of bike maintenance. Whilst we’re probably all guilty of leaving an old bike neglected in a shed or garage, it’s vital for both performance and longevity that regular bike maintenance is undertaken - even if it’s just degreasing the chain and cleaning out parts and components from the gunk sprayed up from the surface of paths and roads. Hardtail mountain bikes make this sometimes tedious process a lot less arduous, with less individual parts to take care of, the simplicity of the hardtail suspension mountain bike frame will keep both the amount of time spent and cost low for maintenance. Cookstown Cycles have hardtail mountain bikes available from Cube, Merida, Orbea and Cannondale.

Alternatively, if hardtail isn’t the suspension type for you, head on over to our large full suspension mountain bikes range.
